6,075 Haitian births at Dominican hospitals

Of 37,158 babies born in maternity wards at public hospitals in the first half of the year, 6,075 were born to foreign mothers, of these 98% Haitians, as reported in Diario Libre. Stats of the Ministry of Public Health say that 36,606 babies were born alive and 539 were born dead.

Santo Domingo.- A group of local moguls headed by Juan Bautista Vicini, the brothers Héctor and Samir Rizek, Mícalo Bermúdez and Jose Luis Coripio (Pepín), has bought the 121 year old newspaper Listin Diario for US$38.5 million, seven years after the fraudulent collapse of its owner the bank Intercontinental (Baninter).

President Leonel Fernandez has authorized the publication of the Bill to Promote Cinematography in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic has long been used as a location for making movies, from the amber mines of Puerto Plata for Jurassic Park, to the streets of colonial Santo Domingo for the Godfather and other movies. Now there is a legal framework providing incentives for moviemakers to come and work here.

The mission will observe the congressional and municipal elections to be held on 16 May 2010. This will be 14th time the OAS observes an election in the DR. The Electoral Observers' Mission begins on 7 May.

An earthquake registering 4.6 points on the Richter scale, whose epicenter was located between Santiago and Puerto Plata in the mountains near Guananico caused panic in several towns in the Cibao region and the north coast last night. The seismic event occurred at 10:53pm on Sunday, as reported by the UASD seismological institute.
