Obama Expresses Gratitude To Dominican President Over Haiti Effort

One of the first messages I wanted to deliver was our appreciation for the role the Dominican Republic played in helping the international community respond to the crisis in Haiti, after the devastating earthquake, Obama said as he hosted Fernandez at the White House on Monday.

Obama praised the Dominican Republic's role, President Fernandez's role in particular, in saving lives in Haiti, that continues even today as work to reconstruct and rebuild the devastated nation progresses.

His comments came as Haiti, which borders the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean island Hispaniola, marked six months since nearly 225,000 people were killed and 1.5 million rendered homeless by the January 12 massive earthquake.
He lauded the Dominican Republic for its diplomatic outreach following the ouster of former Honduran President Manuel Zelaya in a coup just over a year ago. Zelaya, now in exile in the Dominican Republic, accused Washington of having backed his ouster, a claim the State Department has denied.

Obama also stressed the need for a joint, region-wide effort to crack down on drug trafficking and related violence.

President Fernandez and I discussed how we can do a better job coordinating through multi-national groupings to address what is a scourge on so many countries, Obama said.

Fernandez on his part, praised Obama for keeping Latin American issues on his agenda despite his preoccupation with economic and diplomatic crises on multiple fronts.
