Santo Domingo.- Visitors from emergent markets such as Russia have compensated the amount of tourists from traditional markets that didn’t come to the country as the result of the global economic crisis, affirmed Hotels and Restaurants Association (Asonahores) executive vice president Arturo Villanueva.

He hailed Dominican Republic’s effective promotion abroad, headed by Tourism minister Francisco Javier Garcia, along with the private sector,

The hotelier noted Tourism’s spending on promotion for internal tourism and the improved access roads to tourism regions.

Interviewed on Teleantillas, Villanueva said the decline in the number of tourists from countries such as Spain and France has been compensated by visitors from South American nations, Russia, Brazil among others.

He said before the economic crisis there were two weekly flights from Russia, and now there’s one daily, pointing to Dominican Republic’s promotion as a destination in those countries, which in his view has been effective.

Compensation

Villanueva said the Dominican tourists who live abroad compensated the 1.2% fall of foreign tourist visits in May, compared with the previous month.

He noted that the country has become the Caribbean’s tourism leader and we are in the last 9 months with positive figures in tourist arrivals, “by the incidence of the Tourism Ministry’s leadership in that accomplishment.”

Villanueva hailed the “excellent” relationship between the minister of Tourism and Asohanores, which he affirms has led to the industry’s development.
