As polls had forecast, the ruling PLD party swept the 2010 congressional and municipal election held yesterday. The government party won congressional seats for 30 provinces and the National District, 31 of a possible 32. Minority PRSC party candidate Amable Aristy Castro is leading for the senate seat in La Altagracia in the east. One of the surprises is that Gilberto Serulle is leading in the race for mayor of Santiago for the PRD. Serulle initially sought to run on the PLD ticket but was turned down by his own party in favor of a coalition with PRSC mayor Jose Enrique Sued, who is running for re-election.
On the downside, on Sunday, 16 May, election day, five persons died in clashes between the PLD and the PRD followers.
