| Playa Chiquita is Big on Fun in Sosua | |
| Half an hour East of Puerto Plata, Sosua is situated along a spectacular crescent shaped bay, the ends of which rise in rock walls and peninsulas and project out into the Atlantic. With its kilometer-long beach of white sand, pristine water and coral reef heads, Sosua offers the best scuba diving sites and aquatic activities on the Amber Riviera.
Yet Sosua is not all about watersports. This small village is known for its multilingual and cosmopolitan character; it has charming shops, restaurants of every imaginable specialty, sidewalk cafes, discotheques and even its own casino. It is a town that never sleeps. Sosua has a complete spectrum of accommodations, from quaint bed and breakfast inns to mid sized hotels and all-inclusive resorts. It offers an ideal mix of traveler comforts and cultural experiences. English is spoken everywhere and people generally agree that the Dominicans are about the friendliest hosts of any island in the Caribbean. Anyone looking to go beyond the confines of the resort complexes can be sure to find security, variety and friendliness.
Sosua attracts an international crowd, integrating with real Dominican daily life in the streets, restaurants and shops. In 1940, it became home for European Jewish refugees, who settled in Sosua to start a new life. They developed the dairy industry for which the town is noted.
The original synagogue still stands. A visit to the museum behind the temple reveals the early days of this community with a will to survive. The Old World influence is still visible in the towns early architecture, characterized by small, one and two story wooden buildings such as you would find in any small village in Europe. The towns main street, known as Calle Pedro Clisante, is the most popular gathering place. This charming street, permanently covered by the tree canopies, is lined on both sides with quaint shops and sidewalk cafes. Here the European character is most evident. At certain times of the year it is closed to vehicular traffic, turning it into a pedestrian paradise. Half an hour East of Puerto Plata, Sosua is situated along a spectacular crescent shaped bay. |
