| From Pirates Treasure Cove to Marine Adventure Park | |
| Roberto Cofresi was a notorious pirate whose name lives on in Puerto Plata. Born in June 1791 in Cabo Rojo on the Southeast tip of Puerto Rico, the son of a German-Jewish immigrant named Franz Gustav von Kupferstein, he would prey upon the ships in the Mona Passage. His most popular hideouts were the caves on Mona and Saona islands, Samana and along the South coast of Puerto Rico.
On March 19, 1825 he was trapped in a bay and most of his men were killed. The 12 who survived were imprisoned in the El Morro Fort in San Juan. On March 29, he was executed along with his men. Legend says he left buried treasures in the hilly area just West of Puerto Plata that carries his name,Cofresi. Todays Cofresi has a much more legitimate reputation. It is a beautiful resort area with hotels and private villa accommodations, sweeping panoramic ocean views and an enchanting golden beach. It is also the the home of the fascinating marine adventure park Ocean World, including a new marina for international yachts which is soon to open.
The adventure park opened in 2004 and was an instant success with both the locals and the tourist population of the area. It features sea lion shows and participatory events such as dolphin swims and shark encounters; in addition to a giant aquarium, botanical garden complete with rain forest and live tigers.
The park employs a highly trained staff and boasts an impressive safety record. The adventure park and marina are developments of Deep Down Discovery S.A., a German owned corporation with strong experience in the construction and operation of this type of project. |
